Art by Mary McCarthy

Mary McCarthy is largely a self-taught artist who took up painting in preparation for her retirement fourteen years ago. Back then, she attended classes tutored by the renowned seascape artist Brenda Malley, who introduced her to and instilled in her a love of painting in oils.
During Covid, she discovered Dublin Art Classes online and has been a pupil there since, where her art has continued to grow in expertise, technique, and colour. Aside from the classes, she particularly enjoys the community element of the school, including painting weekends away, painting holidays, and sketching opportunities en plein air.
Painting mainly in oils, she also enjoys experimenting in pen and watercolour, pastels, and mixed media. Mary sees the wonder in every aspect of nature and, accordingly, it features prominently in her paintings, where narrative plays an important part. Struck by the light, the colour, the place, the sky, the sea, the ambience, the people, or perhaps all of these together, she draws inspiration for her work.
She is currently painting on natural slate salvaged from her old farmhouse homestead. The raw, rough, and sometimes broken elements of the slate present a challenge, but she loves the organic ground it provides to add texture and character to her paintings.
Mary invites you to linger a moment and enjoy her paintings.
