Born in Dublin in 1944, Teeling received his art education from the National College of Art and Design, studying under notable tutors such as Maurice MacGonigal PPRHA, Carey Clarke PPRHA, and John Kelly RHA. After teaching art at various colleges in Dublin for 12 years, Teeling took a hiatus to pursue a career in the animation industry, where he worked as a background artist for various animation studios, including Don Bluth Studios and Fred Wolf Films.

Teeling’s paintings are known for their vibrant energy, confident use of color, and portrayal of solitary female subjects. His works often feature musical themes and motifs, reflecting his passion for music, which dates back to his youth in Dublin in the 1960s. Teeling has released several solo singles and two LPs in the blues rock genre and is currently part of Crushed Rose, a band in which he provides vocals and lead guitar.

One of Teeling’s most significant achievements is his ten painting suite called The 1916 Rising, which now hangs on permanent display in the General Post Office in Dublin. The oils depict events surrounding the Easter Rising, a pivotal societal event in Ireland’s history.

In Norman Teeling’s workshops, he begins with a blank canvas and takes us on a transformative journey, one brushstroke at a time. His deep knowledge of composition and layout often uncovers details that might otherwise go unnoticed, eliciting plenty of “oohs” and “ahhs” from our students. What may seem intuitive to Norman is a fresh revelation for them, enriching their artistic understanding.
